6. be grateful = 감사하다
grateful은 사람이나 회사가 감사의 뜻을 전할 때 자주 쓰인다. 전치사 선택도 중요하다.

7. helpful = 도움이 되는 / 기꺼이 돕는
helpful은 두 가지 뜻으로 잘 쓰인다. 사람에게 쓰면 “친절하게 도와주는”, 정보나 자료에 쓰면 “유용한”이라는 뜻이다.
The receptionist was very helpful.
그 접수 직원은 매우 친절하게 도움을 주었다.
The website provides helpful information for first-time visitors.
그 웹사이트는 처음 방문하는 사람들에게 유용한 정보를 제공한다.
Ms. Chen gave us several helpful suggestions.

8. 비교급 강조 부사 + better
비교급 better 앞에는 여러 강조 부사가 올 수 있다. 강하게 강조하는 표현과 약하게 강조하는 표현을 구분해 두면 좋다.
The revised proposal is even better than the original one.
수정된 제안서는 원래 것보다 훨씬 더 좋다.
Sales were much better this quarter than last quarter.
이번 분기 매출은 지난 분기보다 훨씬 좋았다.
The second design is good, but the third one is still better.

9. preferred means = 선호되는 수단
means는 “수단, 방법”이라는 뜻이다. 형태는 means이지만 단수와 복수로 모두 쓰일 수 있다.
E-mail is the preferred means of communication for most customers.
이메일은 대부분의 고객들이 선호하는 의사소통 수단이다.
Public transportation is the preferred means of travel for many commuters.
대중교통은 많은 통근자들이 선호하는 이동 수단이다.
Online payment has become the preferred means of payment among younger customers.
온라인 결제가 젊은 고객들이 선호하는 결제 수단이 되었다.
참고로 a man of means는 “자산가”라는 뜻이다. 여기서 means는 재력, 재산의 의미로 쓰인다.

10. S + V + 명사 + -ing + 목적어
명사 뒤에 오는 -ing가 앞의 명사를 수식하는 구조도 토익에서 자주 나온다.
이때 명사 + -ing는 “~하는 명사”로 해석한다.

우리는 귀하의 예약을 확인하는 이메일을 받았다.
The company released a statement explaining the new policy.
회사는 새 정책을 설명하는 성명을 발표했다.
