HanmiGlobal to manage construction of SK hynix's Indiana fab through 2028

HanmiGlobal is overseeing construction of SK hynix's advanced chip packaging plant in Indiana, the project management firm said Monday, as Korean tech firms lean more heavily on specialized managers for their US expansions.

The facility in West Lafayette, Indiana, will be SK hynix's first US production base for advanced packaging for high bandwidth memory chips. Site excavation began in March, with clean room completion targeted for October 2028.

HanmiGlobal joined the project in August 2024 during its pre-construction phase and will continue managing it through to completion in 2028. The firm's role spans design management, scheduling, cost control, quality, safety and risk management, as well as coordinating between SK hynix's Korean and US partners.

The company pointed to the assignment as part of a wider trend in how Korean manufacturers approach US expansion, looking for project managers who blend technical skills with US construction know-how.

HanmiGlobal pointed out that US procurement, contracting, permitting and labor conditions differ substantially from Korea's. Semiconductor plants pose particular coordination challenges, requiring precise scheduling across clean room construction, utility infrastructure and equipment installation, often involving multiple designers, contractors and suppliers simultaneously.

The firm said it manages about 20 advanced manufacturing projects for Korean companies in the US, spanning semiconductors, batteries and subsea cables.
