LG Innotek is expanding its partnership with Zoox, Amazon's autonomous driving subsidiary, supplying automotive camera modules for its purpose-built robotaxis, the South Korean electronics parts maker said Thursday.

The two companies have maintained a close partnership since the early stages of the robotaxi's development. Under their latest agreement, LG Innotek will supply high-resolution automotive cameras for Zoox vehicles over the next several years.

The cameras form part of Zoox's sensor suite, which uses overlapping fields of view to provide 360-degree coverage around the vehicle. LG Innotek said the modules draw on its precision optical design technology developed through years of producing camera modules for mobile devices.

Designed to withstand prolonged exposure to severe weather, the waterproof modules are intended to maintain stable sensing performance under harsh environmental conditions, LG said.

Depending on their mounting positions, these products feature five different fields of view, enabling precise, omnidirectional sensing, the company added.

"LG Innotek’s camera modules are currently being assembled onto Zoox robotaxis, positioning LG Innotek as a key supplier of core perception hardware as the autonomous vehicle industry prepares for rapid growth over the next decade," LG said.

It described the latest agreement as "a major milestone" in the companies' multiyear partnership.

Zoox opened the first robotaxi serial production facility in California as it scales up manufacturing of its purpose-built autonomous vehicles. The company has also launched its robotaxi ride-hailing service in Las Vegas, using vehicles designed from the ground up without conventional driving controls such as a steering wheel or pedals.
