LS Cable & System secures W200b high-voltage grid deal in Singapore

Korean grid facility manufacturer LS Cable & System announced Thursday that it has signed a 200 billion won ($137 million won) contract to supply ultrahigh-voltage electric cables for a power grid project in Singapore.

Under the agreement, LS Cable & System will be responsible for the manufacturing, construction and installation of 230-kilovolt underground grid cables. The project is led by Singapore Power Group, the state-run power distributor in Singapore.

The cables will form part of a grid that connects Singapore with Indonesia, serving as a route for transmitting solar-generated electricity to the island nation.

“This deal reflects recognition of LS Cable & System’s technical capabilities and reliability in a fiercely competitive global market,” an LS official said. “This underground grid project also paves the way for new opportunities in the field of submarine cables.”

As Singapore aims to secure 6 gigawatts of electricity from renewable sources by 2035, the densely populated nation is seeing growing demand for grid systems that can transmit clean energy without above-ground infrastructure.

LS Cable & System also said that it is currently in negotiations for an additional phase of the underground grid installation, valued at approximately 150 billion won. The company is additionally exploring a separate project in partnership with Vietnam Oil and Gas Group, Vietnam’s state-run energy supplier, to transmit wind-generated electricity from a Vietnamese wind farm to Singapore via undersea cables.
