Generative AI, first introduced to the public by models like OpenAI’s GPT series, has reshaped our understanding of artificial intelligence and its creative potential. Today’s AI landscape includes not only ChatGPT but also Claude, Gemini, LLaMA, BLOOM, and emerging platforms such as Grok by xAI. These systems can generate everything from nuanced prose and poetry to music and visual art, at times blurring the line between human ingenuity and machine efficiency.
A new kid on the block is China’s DeepSeek. Despite US government restrictions on graphics chips, DeepSeek developed its model allegedly at just a fraction of the cost typically billed by American tech giants. Known as V3 and R1, DeepSeek’s models deliver impressive performance with significantly fewer parameters than its Western competitors. Their lean design, especially in the V3 version, leverages a new approach that routes tasks to specialized “expert” sub-networks, instead of the standard Transformer architecture. This innovative, cost-effective strategy has rattled stock markets and ignited debates over who has the best AI and how we regulate technology. Zeynep Tufekci, a professor of sociology and public affairs at Princeton University, notes that while nuclear weapons require specialized materials and complex processes, many AI models can be compact enough to fit on a USB stick -- making them easy to replicate and distribute. This analogy challenges the idea of containing AI with outdated regulatory frameworks, highlighting the difficulty of controlling a technology that can spread globally with minimal hardware.
The socioeconomic and geopolitical ramifications of affordable generative or expert AI systems are complex, yet ignoring them is no longer an option. AI can generate vast amounts of content in seconds, disrupting industries such as journalism, writing and the arts. However, as history has shown -- from the industrial revolution to the rise of the internet -- every major technological leap also creates new types of work. Politically, while the US has tried to slow AI progress through safety mandates and export restrictions on AI chips, the success of DeepSeek (if concerns about originality and development costs clear up) suggests that these measures may be less effective than intended. DeepSeek’s achievement illustrates the fundamental flaws of attempting to contain AI, signaling that governments and industries should instead prepare for the sweeping changes that artificial general intelligence will bring.
Beyond its technical breakthroughs, generative AI raises critical questions about ethics and creativity. Can a machine’s ability to produce art as well as human-like reasoning diminish the value of human creativity? Because these systems learn from large datasets, they may replicate or even amplify existing biases, inadvertently perpetuating stereotypes or misinformation. Some argue for making datasets as unbiased as possible, with oversight in place. Others caution that just as there are rogue states and cultural conflicts, we may soon see “rogue AIs,” “Western AIs vs. Eastern AIs,” “corporate AIs” or even “religious AIs.” Another pressing issue is accessibility: while generative AI promises to democratize content creation, there is a real risk of monopolization by a few powerful tech corporations, locked behind steep paywalls or proprietary frameworks. In the smartphone market, competition eventually narrowed to Apple and Samsung; a similar trend may emerge in AI -- though having more competitors, I would say, “the more the merrier.”
This dynamic, uncertain AI environment underscores a broader strategic lesson for South Korea, home to major tech players such as Samsung (chips and smartphones), LG (smart home appliances) and Hyundai (smart cars). Some experts say Korea lags in generative AI, but it still has room to compete -- particularly in predictive (expert) systems for specialized tasks. South Korea can position itself as a leader with “affordable and safe AI models.” In particular, leveraging large-scale public data (i.e., the national health care or education databases) could enable innovative, world-class AI services. With bold policies that foster AI talent, expanding research and development, and focusing on high-potential areas, Korea can carve out a distinct niche in the global AI ecosystem. Of course, this goes beyond adding coding to national exams or rolling out basic programming curricula in schools.
In fact, any push for AI leadership will crumble if society remains overly fixated on college rankings and glorifies traditional career paths such as law or medicine. We need a generation adept not only in mathematics, technology and science, but also in culture and the arts -- laying solid foundations in high school and broadening these skills at the university level.
Korea is known for its strong human capital, yet also for faltering policies and petty politics. Before AI education took center stage, parents spent fortunes on English and math education, often harming children’s development. Now I predict the same frenzy for AI, as people crave quick success like China’s DeepSeek. Instead, we need a startup-friendly business environment, free college tuition for math and science, and economic growth that creates quality jobs for college grads. That’s my simple formula for a brighter future for Korea.
