Polls show parties in neck-and-neck race for Wednesday’s elections
The country’s two main political parties continued to exchange barbed attacks Sunday, fishing for votes in a dead-heat race for control of the next parliament.
The governing Saenuri Party continued its blitzkrieg against the main opposition Democratic United Party, making full use of public anger over foul remarks that a DUP candidate made eight years ago.
“I am worried about our children. What will they learn from (our politics)? I cannot help but questioning whether social responsibility means anything for the opposition party,” Park Geun-hye, the ruling party leader, said in Cheonan, a stop on her campaign trail.
Seizing on Kim Yong-min, a DUP candidate who made raunchy jokes and sexually violent remarks about U.S. government officials in an internet radio program, the party is trying to portrait its liberal rival as irresponsible and detrimental to national interests.
“There is a high chance that the two opposition parties will unite and take a majority of the seats in the parliament. Only you can stop them,” the politician said, with her right hand bandaged after too many handshakes with voters.
The Saenuri Party opened new attacks on two other DUP candidates ― Moon Jae-in, running for a Busan seat and Chung Sye-kyun for Seoul’s Jongno seat. It accuses Moon, a potential presidential contender, of construction law violations regarding his home in Yangsa and Chung of plagiarizing his doctoral papers.
The DUP, for its part, heightened attack on President Lee Myung-bak on suspicions that the Presidential Office may have directed a secret surveillance and sabotage operation targeting his critics.
“President Lee and Saenuri chair Park are so desperate to distract voters away from (the surveillance scandal). So much so that they try to frame the election as a judgment on Kim Yong-min, not President Lee,” Park Sun-sook, the DUP’s secretary general said.
The DUP, in alliance with the far-left Unified Progressive Party, is asking voters to vote for them in condemnation of the ruling camp for its corruption, failure to address the yawning rich-poor gap, and mostly importantly, abuse of power which undermined the very principles of democracy.
Koreans will go to polls Wednesday to elect 300 lawmakers, 246 directly from precincts and 54 through proportional representation.
The ballot comes just eight months away from another election to pick successor. The results will therefore hugely influence the dynamics of the presidential race, pundits say.
Public opinion polls, conducted early last week before a ban by the national election watchdog, showed the rivals were neck-and-neck.
Political pundits predict that the opposition is likely to win around 130 to 140 seats.
“Our analysis is that around 70 races are in a dead heat. Of them, 30 to 40 seats look like a real toss-up,” the DUP’s Park said. “More than ever before, we’re witnessing strong forces rallying conservative voters behind Saenuri.”
Lee Hae-hoon, a senior member of Saenuri’s campaign headquarters, said all of the party’s 230 constituency candidates would go on a 48-hour campaign stretch to the finish line ― midnight Tuesday ― without sleeping.
“The country’s future hinges on this election. We’ll do everything we can to stop the opposition from taking a majority of the seats,” he said.

'김용민-불법사찰' 총선 악재대결 변수
4ㆍ11총선이 D-3일까지도 대혼전 양상을 보이고 있는 가운데 막판의 양대 악재가 선거판을 어떻게 움직일 지 초미의 관심이다.
국무총리실의 민간인 불법사찰 파문은 여당에, 서울 노원갑에 출마한 민주통합 당 김용민 후보의 `막말ㆍ저질발언'은 야당에 악재임은 분명하다.
그러나 두 악재의 파괴력에 대해서는 전문가들 사이에서도 의견이 분분하다.
특히 여야의 전통적 지지층을 결집시켰다는 데에는 이의가 없지만 부동층의 `결 심'에까지 영향을 미쳤는가를 놓고서는 분석이 엇갈리고 있다.
새누리당의 한 관계자는 "두 이슈에 반응하는 쪽은 고정 지지세력들"이라며 "제 3의 중간층이 이것 때문에 마음이 바뀌는 것 같지는 않다"고 말했다.
다른 관계자는 "김용민 후보의 발언이 초반이었다면 파장이 컸겠으나 부동층이 어느 정도 마음을 정한 다음에 알려져 판을 흔드는 데는 한계가 다소 있었다"고 분 석했다.
민주통합당 박선숙 사무총장은 8일 기자간담회에서 `막말 파문' 후 수도권의 판 세변화를 묻는 질문에 "이렇게 팽팽한 선거 상황에서는 어떤 사안이 플러스(+), 마
이너스(-) 한쪽 방향으로 작용하는 것은 아닌 것 같다"고 말했다.
한 정치 분석 전문가는 연합뉴스와의 통화에서 "민생 문제가 아니라 `불법사찰'
, `김용민 막말' 등을 놓고 여야가 이전투구식 공방전을 벌이면서 정치권을 외면한 유권자의 실망감이 더 커질 수 있다"며 청년층은 물론 중ㆍ장년층에서도 투표율이 낮아질 가능성을 거론했다.
그러나 선거전 막바지에 `폭로전'이 가열되면서 여야는 이들 이슈를 계속 쟁점 화시킬 것으로 보인다. 시일이 지나면서 유권자가 식상하는 측면이 없지 않지만 워 낙 휘발성이 큰 사안이라고 보는 것이다.
민주통합당은 막판에 접어들면서 사찰파문을 `정권심판론'과 연계시켜 재점화시 키고 있다.
한명숙 대표는 8일 서울 마포을 유세에서 "저라면 죄없는 민간인에 대해 뒷조사 , 미행, 도청하고 이메일을 뒤지는 이런 정당의 후보는 찍지 않겠다"고 말했다.
서울 서대문갑 유세에서도 "이명박 정권 4년, 새누리당 정권 4년, 민생대란 4년 이었다"며 "죄없는 국민들 뒷조사, 미행하고 개인 사생활 파헤쳐서 괴롭히고 도청하 고 이메일 뒤지는 이런 나라에서 더이상 살고 싶은가. 민주주의가 무너졌다"고 성토 했다.
새누리당도 김 후보의 막말을 계속 `핫이슈'로 끌어가고 있다. 김 후보가 완주 의사를 분명히하자 민주당에 `출당'을 요구하며 공세의 수위를 높였다.
박근혜 선대위원장도 대전 유세에서 "교육을 통째로 마비시키겠다는 작정이 아 니라면 어떻게 이런 후보가 나올 수가 있는가"라며 "새누리당은 이런 식으로 막 가 는 국회, 정치를 막아야 된다고 생각한다"고 야당 견제론을 강화했다.
또 "도대체 우리의 자라나는 아이들이 무엇을 보고 자라야 될 지, 또 아이들을 어떻게 가르치겠다는 것인 지 걱정되지 않을 수가 없다"며 "야당은 `사회적 책임'이 라는 것을 무엇이라고 생각하는 지 묻지 않을 수 없다"고 공세했다. (연합뉴스)
