While fans praised his strong stage presence, others criticized his poor live performance
K-pop fans took a trip down memory lane watching G-Dragon's live stage for the SBS Gayo Daejeon on Christmas Day, but the performance left some disappointed.
The K-pop icon graced the annual music event's ending with his mega-hits "Crooked" (2013), "Sober" (2016) and his latest song "Power," released on Oct. 31. When his performance was released on YouTube, it instantly became the most trending video on YouTube, garnering more than 3.2 million views as of Friday afternoon.
While many praised him for keeping the audience engaged with his strong stage presence and charisma, with some fans referring to him as "the living legend," the seven-minute-long performance came under fire for poor singing.
The 36-year-old musician used AR -- a backing track that blends live singing with prerecorded vocals -- during the performance. Some commenters believe he relied too heavily on the prerecorded track; others criticized his raspy, throat-scratching singing technique.
"Today's performance was really bad. If it were another artist, they would be roasted for sure," one comment on the online community Theqoo read.
"He is not actually singing live. He just did ad-libs," another comment read.
G-Dragon has not commented on the issue.
