[Graphic News] 40% of violent crimes committed out of opportunity

Statistics released by the National Police Agency showed that 4 out of 10 crimes were committed out of opportunity.

Nearly 1.78 million crimes were reported last year, a 4.2 percent decrease from 1.86 million in 2013, the statistics on crimes in the last five years showed.

Crimes of opportunity, meaning crimes that were committed without plan and spontaneously, were rampant among violence (42.5 percent of the total), murder (29.8 percent) and rape (27.2 percent).

The report included for the first time the nationalities of the caught suspects and motivations for each crime.

The report added that many suspects were intoxicated with alcohol while committing violence (33.9 percent), murder (22.6 percent) and rape (30.4 percent).

White-collar crimes and theft, meanwhile, showed slight year-on-year declines by 9.3 percent and 7.7 percent, respectively.
