South Korea‘s foreign ministry on Thursday denounced Japanese Foreign Minister Fumio Kishida for trying to raise an “unfair argument” on Dokdo in a speech renewing Japan’s claim to the South‘s easternmost islets.
Seoul’s foreign ministry spokesman Han Hye-jin made the remarks in response to a parliamentary speech by Kishida earlier in the day that renewed Japan‘s territorial claim to Dokdo.
“The government expresses strong regret about the ill-considered remarks by the foreign minister of Japan’s new government who is trying to raise an unfair argument about Dokdo,” Han said.
“Dokdo is an integral part of the Korean territory historically, geographically and under international law,” Han said. “The government will deal firmly with any attempts by Japan to undermine Korea‘s sovereignty over Dokdo.”
While South Korea and Japan underwent near simultaneous leadership changes, diplomatic tensions have remained high over Dokdo, which lies closer to South Korea in the body of water between the Korean Peninsula and Japan.
Relations between Seoul and Tokyo have frayed following an unprecedented visit to Dokdo last August by South Korea’s former President Lee Myung-bak, who cited Tokyo‘s unrepentant attitude over its brutal 1910-45 colonial rule of the Korean Peninsula as a key reason for his trip.
Dokdo has long been a thorn in relations between the two countries. South Korea keeps a small police detachment on the islets. Meanwhile, Han said her government is in the midst of an internal review on the issue of two stolen Buddhist statues after Japan’s Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga said this week that Tokyo will demand Seoul swiftly return them.
“The government is reviewing how to resolve the issue based on domestic laws governing the protection of cultural heritage and relevant regulations by UNESCO,” Han said.
Five people were recently arrested in South Korea for stealing the two statues from a Japanese temple and trying to sell them here. But a South Korean scholar claimed that one of the statutes had been originally plundered by Japan centuries ago, prompting a Korean court to rule that it should not be returned to Japan until a probe determines whether the Japanese temple acquired it in a legitimate manner.
Han said the Japanese government has yet to officially request South Korea return them. (Yonhap)

일본 외무상은 지난 28일, 작년에 이어 2년 연속 의회 외교연설에서 독도 영유권을 주장했다.
기시다 후미오(岸田文雄) 일본 외무상은 28일은 외교연설에서 한국에 대해 “미래 지향적이고 중층적이고, 보다 강고한 관계를 구축할 것을 호소한다”며 독도 문제를 “하루저녁에 해결하지는 않지만, 끈질기게 대응할 것”이라고 밝혔다.
일본 민주당 정권 시절인 작년 1월 겐바 고이치로(玄葉光一郞) 당시 외무상은 1965년 한일수교 이후 외무상의 의회 외교연설 사상 처음으로 독도 영유권을 주장했다. 그는 당시 독도 문제에 대해 “받아들일 수 없는 것은 받아들일 수 없다고 (한국에) 전하겠다”고 말했다.
