Rumors of cannibalism in North Korea have resurfaced, a U.S. daily newspaper reported.
The Washington Post article titled “The Cannibals of North Korea” reported rumors that people are mysteriously disappearing, and that others are eating their own children due to extreme starvation.
This is not the first time that rumors of cannibalism have been reported. In 2009, “Nothing to Envy,” written by reporter Barbara Demick, said North Koreans avoided meat soup sold on the street, kept children from walking alone at night, and the reclusive regime arrested people who allegedly ate human flesh.
The Washington Post, however, said the rumors were not confirmed but noted that such rumors kept coming out.
“Eating human flesh reflects North Korea’s status quo of famine and social disruption. What is certain is that people believe that eating their own children is plausible in such harsh situations,” said the Washington Post.

미국의 일간신문 워싱턴 포스트(WP)가 5일 북한 안팎에서 흘러나오는 ’식인 괴담’을 보도했다.
WP는 ’북한의 식인(The Cannibals of North Korea)’이라는 제목의 기사에서 일부징겨에서 굶주림으로 미친 사람들이 자기 아이들을 잡아먹는다는 이야기가 다시 등장했다고 전했다.
북한의 식인 현상에 대한 보도는 이번이 처음이 아니다. 2009년 바버라 데믹이 발간한 북한 관련 책(Nothing to Envy)에는 북한 주민들이 거리에서 파는 고깃국을 피하고, 자녀들에게 밤에 혼자 다니지 못하게 하고, 인육을 먹은 주민이 체포됐다는 내용이 포함되어있다.
WP는 이런 소문에 대해 확실히 알지 못하지만 이런 소문이 정기적으로 나오고 있다는 점에 주목한다고 전했다.
그러면서 “인육 섭취는 굶주림과 사회붕괴, 북한이 처해있는 상황을 보여주는 징후이다. 확실한 것은 북한 주민들 스스로 이런 일이 가능하다고 생각한다는 사실”이라고 덧붙였다. (코리아헤럴드)
