N. Korean man rescued in Yellow Sea by U.N. observers

An unidentified North Korean is undergoing treatment at a local hospital after being rescued in the Yellow Sea, defense officials said Saturday.

The source said that the man, who remains unconscious, was found Friday in a wooden boat by a helicopter carrying U.N. observers who were returning from a live fire exercise on Yeonpyeong island.

The boat was discovered at around 2 p.m. by the helicopter. Of the three people on the boat two were already dead.

Military authorities and police said that once the North Korean regains consciousness he will be questioned about why he was on the boat and other personal information.

The Coast Guard and Navy have conducted a search to find the boat and the two bodies because the U.N. observers had left the boat and rushed to shore so the man could receive medical attention.

“The search will go on until the boat and bodies are found,” an official said. (Yonhap News)
