PORT ELIZABETH, South Africa (AP) ― Ghana beat Niger 3-0 Monday night on goals by Asamoah Gyan, Christian Atsu and John Boye, advancing to an African Cup of Nations quarterfinal against Cape Verde.
Gyan put the Black Stars ahead in the sixth minute and crossed to set up Atsu’s goal in the 23rd.
Boye scored in the 49th following Gyan’s header off a free kick.
At Durban, Mali tied Congo 1-1 and will play host South Africa in Saturday’s other quarterfinal.
Congo’s Lomana LuaLua hit a post 20 seconds in, and Mohamed Sissoko brought down Yves Ilunga just inside the penalty area 15 seconds later.
Xavi signs through 2016
BARCELONA (AP) ― Xavi Hernandez has extended his contract with Barcelona for another two years, committing to stay with the club through 2016.
The 33-year-old Spanish midfielder completed the deal with club president Sandro Rosell on Monday, with vice president Josep Maria Bartomeu and football director Andoni Zubizarreta looking on.
Xavi, who finished third in the FIFA Player of the Year voting from 2009-11, said “this is where I want to be,” adding that Barcelona had always been his first choice.
Galatasaray, Drogba agree
ISTANBUL (AP) ― Galatasaray says it has reached a deal to sign former Chelsea forward Didier Drogba, a deal that follows last week’s acquisition of Wesley Sneijder from Inter Milan.
Galatasaray said on its website Monday that Drogba has agreed to an 18-month deal.
