The Glendale Unified School District in California has hired a company to monitor students’ social media use, Fox News reported Wednesday.
“Teachers cannot protect students after they go home,” district superintendent Richard Sheehan said.
The company plans to keep an eye on 13,000 students’ posts on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter for any evidence of bullying, drug use, crime and suicidal thoughts, according to the Glendale News Press.
School officials cited successful cases in which students were given help following the monitoring of their behavior on social media.
“This is stuff that is public, it’s for anyone to be seen out there,” said one parent. However, some parents and students feel it could undermine privacy.
