South Korean President Park Geun-hye will travel to Russia next month for a summit of the Group of 20 major economies before making a state visit to Vietnam for summit talks expected to focus on economic cooperation with the fast-growing nation, her office said Tuesday.
The Sept. 4-11 trip to Russia‘s second-largest city of Saint Petersburg and the Vietnamese cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City mark Park’s third overseas trip since taking office in early February. She earlier visited the United States in May and China in June.
While in Saint Petersburg from Sept. 4-7, Park will join other world leaders attending the G20 summit to discuss global economic issues, such as how to spur growth, create jobs, and promote trade and investment, the presidential office said in a statement.
Park plans to call for countries to make concerted efforts to help the global economy overcome uncertainties and get on the sustainable growth track. In particular, she will also deliver a “lead speech” where she plans to highlight the importance of resolving the problems of low growth and high unemployment, the statement said.
Other issues she plans to focus on include aid programs for developing economies.
On the sidelines of the summit, Park plans to hold one-on-one talks with some of the leaders participating in the summit, the office said without providing further specifics. At issue, however, is whether Park will meet bilaterally with Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. (Yonhap News)
