Winning numbers drawn in huge U.S. Powerball jackpot

Last-minute fortune seekers across the U.S. rushed to buy lottery tickets Saturday, undeterred by the astronomically low odds of winning a Powerball jackpot that could reach a near-historic $600 million.

Saturday night’s winning numbers were 10, 13, 14, 22 and 52, with a Powerball of 11. Officials have not yet announced whether there is a winner.

The chances of winning are 1 in 175.2 million. That’s how many different ways you can combine the numbers when you play.

Lottery officials estimate about 80 percent of those possible combinations have been purchased. That means someone is almost sure to win the game’s highest jackpot.

The problem, of course, is those same odds just about guarantee the lucky person won’t be you.

That didn’t stop people across Powerball-playing states -- 43 plus Washington, D.C., and the U.S. Virgin Islands -- from lining up at gas stations and convenience stores Saturday for their chance at striking it filthy rich.

Lottery officials said Saturday night that the latest Powerball jackpot figure results are still pending. Estimates have put the jackpot at around $600 million. (AP)
