The ASEAN-Korea Center is set to kick off a program aimed at increasing awareness of Southeast Asian culture among elementary school students on Monday.
The 2014 ASEAN School Tour Program will host an event to enhance the understanding of Southeast Asian cultures and raise multicultural awareness among elementary school students in Korea.
The program will run May 19 to May 23 at five elementary schools across North Chungcheong Province, where a large number of multicultural families are concentrated.
Under the theme “ASEAN and Korea We are Friends,” the event will host various activities, such as watching introductory videos about ASEAN culture and history, as well as quiz competitions. It will also feature a cultural experience pavilion for students to check out the food, traditional costumes and musical instruments of ASEAN nations.
The ASEAN embassies in Korea and North Chungcheong Province Office of Education will cohost the event, which will be held in other regions nationwide in the latter half of the year.
The ASEAN School Tour Program was designed to raise awareness of ASEAN nations, with 10,000 students from over 50 schools participating since its launch in 2009.
The 2014 school tour program is expected to be especially meaningful, as this year marks the 25th anniversary of Korea-ASEAN dialogue relations.
The Association of Southeast Asian Nations is a 10-member political and economic organization consisting of Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, Myanmar, Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam.
