Korea’s marine waste up 20% in 4 years

한국 해양 폐기물, 4년간 20% 증가

The amount of marine waste collected from South Korean waters rose nearly 20 percent over four years, with submerged waste such as discarded fishing gear showing a sharper increase, government data showed.

한국 해역에서 수거된 해양 폐기물의 양이 4년간 약 20% 증가한 것으로 나타났다. 폐어구 등 바닷속에 가라앉은 해양 폐기물은 더 큰 폭으로 늘었다.

The total volume of marine waste collected increased 19.8 percent, from 120,736 tons in 2021 to 144,615 tons in 2025, according to data from the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries submitted to Rep. Lee Seong-gwon of the People Power Party, a member of the National Assembly’s Agriculture, Food, Rural Affairs, Oceans and Fisheries Committee.

국회 농림축산식품해양수산위원회 소속 이성권 국민의힘 의원이 해양수산부로부터 제출받은 자료에 따르면, 해양 폐기물 수거량은 2021년 12만736톤에서 2025년 14만4,615톤으로 19.8% 증가했다.

The amount of submerged marine waste, including discarded fishing nets and traps, rose 43.4 percent over the same period, from 18,944 tons to 27,167 tons. The volume peaked at 28,541 tons in 2024 before declining last year.

폐어망과 폐어구 등을 포함한 수중 해양 폐기물 수거량은 같은 기간 1만8,944톤에서 2만7,167톤으로 43.4% 늘었다. 수거량은 2024년 2만8,541톤으로 정점을 찍은 뒤 지난해 감소했다.

The government’s budget for marine waste collection has also grown steadily, rising from 75.46 billion won in 2021 to 103.65 billion won in 2025. The allocation for 2026 increased further to 111.42 billion won, up 47.7 percent from 2021.

해양 폐기물 수거 관련 정부 예산도 꾸준히 증가했다. 예산은 2021년 754억6,000만원에서 2025년 1,036억5,000만원으로 늘었다. 2026년 예산은 1,114억2,000만원으로 추가 증액돼 2021년보다 47.7% 증가했다.
