Girl group's fifth EP features lead single 'You’re Under Arrest,' previously unveiled at Seoul encore concert
Illit's return Monday marks a shift from the group's earlier portrayals of innocent crushes toward a more assertive approach to romance.
The five-member group, currently promoting as a quartet while Moka remains on hiatus, introduced its fifth EP, "Break Even," at a media showcase in Seoul ahead of its 6 p.m. release.
The EP's electro-pop lead single "You’re Under Arrest" was unveiled at the group's recent encore concert in Seoul. Its lyrics playfully accuse someone of committing the "crime" of habitual kindness, leading the narrator to mistake friendly gestures for romantic interest.
"It's a song that delivers Illit's bold warning that we'll put an end to such a frustrating relationship ourselves," Wonhee said at the showcase.
Yunah highlighted the track's distinctive sound.
"The song takes the catchiness that characterizes Illit's music to another level. The whistle appears throughout the song, rather than just in one section, so I think it will capture listeners' attention," she said.
The accompanying music video features actor Song Kang alongside the members, who portray black-clad agents pursuing someone who has toyed with their emotions.
Yunah said she met Song during filming and received encouragement from him.
"He told us that he had been following our activities and gave us a lot of encouragement. I'd like to take this opportunity to thank him," she said.
The EP explores what the group describes as a break-even point in a relationship, when the emotional investment no longer justifies the effort. Rather than continuing to pursue someone who does not reciprocate their feelings, the members choose to walk away.
Minju said the album reflects a more direct approach to expressing emotions.
"Many people have described us as a darker version of Illit with this album," she said. "We express our emotions much more openly. After realizing that the feelings were one-sided, we turn cold, and our frustration and anger eventually explode."
The four tracks follow that emotional progression, beginning with "Super in Love," in which the narrator realizes that a supposed romance existed only in her imagination. The second track, "More," turns embarrassment into irritation, while "You’re Under Arrest" marks the emotional climax and the decision to end the relationship.
The closing track, "Pop," introduces a new romantic interest and a return to optimism.
"The tracklist was organically arranged according to the flow of emotions we experience," Minju said. "The final track, 'Pop,' carries a positive message that the failure of a previous relationship was simply part of the journey toward finding good fortune."
The album also includes lyrical references to the group's previous releases, including "IYKYK" and "Jellyous," connecting the new material to Illit's earlier musical narratives.
Hybe Chairman Bang Si-hyuk participated in producing all four tracks. Minju said the members did not meet him directly during preparations but were encouraged to hear that he had praised the recordings as their best yet.
The comeback comes without Moka, who remains on hiatus while recovering.
"This is our first time preparing for a comeback as four members, and we really felt her absence," Minju said. "Although only four of us will be promoting this time, we'll do our best to fill the stage with Moka's spirit as well."
Iroha added that Moka had listened to the new songs and expressed her support.
"She really wants to return to the fans and is working hard on her recovery," Iroha said. "I hope everyone will wait until Moka returns."
Despite the lineup change, the members expressed confidence in their new direction, emphasizing their determination to retain Illit's musical identity while expanding their range.
"I don't think Illit's identity is confined to any single mold," Yunah said. "Everything you're seeing from Illit right now is part of who we are. We'll continue to broaden our spectrum by showing sides of ourselves without limits."
