Daejeon has built its tourism identity around bread, and this weekend the city is asking visitors to take that appetite beyond a single festival ground.
The 2026 Daejeon Bread Festival will take place Saturday and Sunday around Hanbit Tower at Expo Science Park, bringing 120 local bakeries, including the iconic Sungsimdang, to one site. Alongside the festival, the city has lined up tours, activities and travel packages designed to send visitors to other neighborhoods.
According to Daejeon Metropolitan City and Daejeon Tourism Organization, the festival has relocated this year from Soje-dong cafe street and the Daedongcheon stream area, where it was held last year, to the larger Expo grounds in Yuseong-gu.
The main sales area, called Bread Station, is divided into five zones. Bakery exhibitions, hands-on programs and a purchase receipt event will run alongside the sales booths.
With the event no longer held in Soje-dong, the city has added the Bread City Tour, a bus route that circulates among local bakeries to keep visitors flowing through older commercial districts.
The city said it revised the route in October to include eight bakeries selected based on visitor surveys and online search volume. During the festival, the Expo Science Park site will be added as a stop so riders can visit stores and the festival in one trip.
A separate program, Kkumdori's Daejeon Bread Expedition, will continue through November. Participants complete missions by verifying purchases at local bakeries and visits to nearby tourist sites, then receive rewards.
Korail is also selling a rail package that builds downtown into the itinerary. The Saturday day trip, priced at 79,000 won ($58) per person and available on Korail's travel booking site, tours Daejeon Jungang Market, the area around Mokcheokgyo Bridge, Euneujeongi Culture Street and the Sungsimdang neighborhood before heading to the festival grounds in the afternoon.
The itinerary pairs a guided alley walk, featuring local stories told through bread, with free time downtown. Participants have lunch at Jungang Market before traveling by vehicle to the festival.
Package participants receive 10,000 won in Onnuri gift certificates and a 5,000-won bread voucher. The certificates can be spent at Jungang Market, turning the alley visit into local spending.
Transportation links have been arranged for the festival. Shuttle buses run every 15 minutes between the east plaza of Daejeon Station and Mulbit Square, with a 1,000-won day pass allowing unlimited rides. A second route connects Exit 2 of Government Complex Daejeon Station with the entrance to broadcaster TJB.
