A nurse recently used CPR to resusitate a man in his 60s who fell unconscious inside a subway train, a Seoul-based hospital said Thursday.
Nurse Seo Hye-won of the Catholic Univ. of Korea Seoul St. Mary's Hospital saw the man collapse inside a train of the Seoul subway Line No. 7, at around 6 p.m. on Oct. 1. She requested help from the 119 emergency service, while checking his condition and restraining other untrained citizens from performing emergency treatments on the man who was seizing.
Seo saw the man was showing signs of cardiac arrest and performed CPR. She and other passengers moved the patient to the platform at Junggok Station, one station away from the Gunja station where he had collapsed.
The patient regained consciousness by the time rescue crews arrived and was taken to a local medical institute for treatment.
Seo, a nurse with 15 years of experience, said her training helped her respond to the potentially critical situation.
"The man who collapsed was someone's neighbor and family, and all I could think about was that I had to save him," she was quoted as saying.
A Seoul Metro employee relayed details of the situation to the hospital and expressed hopes more people like Seo would step up in emergencies.
Lee Ji-youl, the chief of Seo's hospital, commended her actions and vowed to consistently train and support his staff so they could help protect others whenever they are needed.
