Some 25.9 percent of young Korean men appear to lean far-right politically, a recent study indicated, showing a potentially severe ideological divide by gender and generation.

최근 한 연구에 따르면 한국 청년 남성의 약 25.9%가 정치적으로 극우 성향을 보이는 것으로 나타나, 성별과 세대에 따른 심각한 이념적 분열 가능성을 시사했다.

Published in the Korean Journal of Sociology, the study used data from a Hankook Research survey commissioned by Sisa IN last year and the 2025 Korean General Social Survey to categorize 2,000 participants by their apparent political orientation. Scholars used their responses to welfare, economic and medical policies to divide respondents into three groups: youth (18-34), middle-aged (35-64) and older (65 and above).

한국사회학회지에 게재된 이번 연구는 시사인이 지난해 한국리서치에 의뢰한 설문조사와 2025년 한국종합사회조사 자료를 활용해 참가자 2,000명을 정치 성향에 따라 분류했다. 연구진은 복지·경제·의료 정책에 대한 응답을 바탕으로 응답자를 청년(18~34세), 중장년(35~64세), 노년(65세 이상) 세 그룹으로 나눴다.

Some 25.9 percent of male youth were thought to have far-right inclinations, according to the analysis. The figure was higher than any other age or gender group, and stood in stark contrast to the female youth group's 4.2 percent -- the lowest of any other group.

분석 결과 청년 남성의 25.9%가 극우 성향을 가진 것으로 추정됐다. 이는 다른 어떤 연령·성별 집단보다도 높은 수치로, 모든 집단 중 가장 낮은 수치인 청년 여성의 4.2%와 뚜렷한 대조를 이뤘다.

Young men were the clear leader in terms of those with right-leaning inclinations, at 50.1 percent. This was substantially higher than the next highest group, who were 65-and-above at 39.2 percent.

우파 성향을 지닌 비율에서도 청년 남성이 50.1%로 단연 앞섰다. 이는 그다음으로 높은 65세 이상 집단의 39.2%보다도 상당히 높은 수치다.

Only 22.9 percent of young women leaned right, the second-lowest figure next to 21.1 percent for middle-aged women.

청년 여성 중 우파 성향은 22.9%에 그쳐, 중장년 여성의 21.1%에 이어 두 번째로 낮은 수치를 기록했다.

Young men's right-leaning tendencies also clashed with those of middle-aged men, among whom only 27.4 percent were conservatives and 13.4 percent far-right. Nearly half (45.1 percent) of the middle-aged men leaned left, which was the highest among any age group.

청년 남성의 우파 성향은 중장년 남성과도 뚜렷이 엇갈렸다. 중장년 남성 중 보수 성향은 27.4%, 극우 성향은 13.4%에 불과했다. 반면 중장년 남성의 거의 절반(45.1%)이 좌파 성향을 보여, 모든 연령대 중 가장 높은 비율을 기록했다.

Women generally had more moderates than men: moderates accounted for 43.1 percent in the youth category, 41.8 percent for middle-aged and 40.6 percent for those in the older category. No male group had a centrist percentage exceeding 31.8 percent, the share recorded for male youth.

전반적으로 여성이 남성보다 중도 성향 비율이 높았다. 중도 성향은 청년 여성 43.1%, 중장년 여성 41.8%, 노년 여성 40.6%로 나타났다. 반면 남성 집단에서는 중도 비율이 가장 높은 청년 남성조차 31.8%를 넘지 못했다.

Researchers noted that only 10 percent of young Korean men actually identified as far-right, despite their preferred policies indicating otherwise. Saying this indicates young men may view far-right political orientation as universal, not extreme, the researchers urged further study into this possibility.

연구진은 청년 남성 가운데 실제로 스스로를 극우로 자인한 비율은 10%에 불과했다고 지적했다. 이들이 선호하는 정책은 그렇지 않음을 시사했음에도 말이다. 연구진은 이는 청년 남성들이 극우적 정치 성향을 극단적인 것이 아니라 보편적인 것으로 인식하고 있을 가능성을 보여준다며, 이에 대한 추가 연구가 필요하다고 강조했다.

The study said that the high percentage of young men categorized as far-right has been an ongoing trend since 2005. They pointed out that in the 2005 KGSS, the percentage of right-leaning young men was actually lower than right-leaning young women.

연구는 청년 남성의 높은 극우 성향 비율이 2005년부터 이어져 온 추세라고 밝혔다. 연구진은 2005년 한국종합사회조사에서는 오히려 우파 성향 청년 남성의 비율이 우파 성향 청년 여성보다 낮았다고 지적했다.

“This trajectory casts doubt on interpretations of youth conservatism and far-right disposition as a transient phenomenon and calls for a structural, long-term perspective,” researchers wrote.

연구진은 “이러한 흐름은 청년층의 보수화와 극우 성향을 일시적인 현상으로 해석하는 시각에 의문을 제기하며, 구조적이고 장기적인 관점을 요구한다”고 밝혔다.

The study was conducted by sociology professor Kim Chang-hwan of the University of Kansas and Choi Seong-soo, an associate professor of sociology at Yonsei University.
