South Korea’s largest theme park, Everland, announced Friday that it has named its baby panda Shu Bao, coinciding with the cub’s 100th day.
한국 최대 규모의 놀이공원 에버랜드는 아기 판다의 탄생 100일을 맞아 이름을 ‘슈바오’로 확정했다고 금요일 밝혔다.
Last month, the theme park opened votes online to name its baby panda, with five finalists in the running.
지난 달, 에버랜드는 지난달 아기 판다의 이름을 정하기 위한 온라인 투표를 진행했으며, 최종 후보에는 다섯 개의 이름이 올랐다.
All five candidates were two-character Chinese names ending in “Bao.” The character means “treasure” and appears in the names of pandas from the same family.
후보 이름 다섯 개는 모두 ‘바오’로 끝나는 두 글자의 중국어 이름이었다. ‘바오’는 ‘보물’을 뜻하며 같은 가족 판다들의 이름에도 공통으로 들어간다.
Voters could choose their favorite from Ju Bao (“treasured jade”), Jun Bao (“outstanding treasure”), Lin Bao (“treasure precious as jade”), Yu Bao (“blessed treasure”) and Shu Bao (“dawn-bright treasure”).
투표 참여자들은 주바오(‘소중한 옥’), 준바오(‘뛰어난 보물’), 린바오(‘옥처럼 귀한 보물’), 유바오(‘축복받은 보물’), 슈바오(‘새벽처럼 밝은 보물’) 가운데 하나를 선택할 수 있었다.
The cub’s parents, Ai Bao and Le Bao, were brought to Korea in 2016 under a 15-year contract for joint research. She is also the younger sister of Pu Bao, who was born in 2020, and twins Rui Bao and Hui Bao, born in 2023.
새끼 판다의 부모인 아이바오와 러바오는 공동 연구를 위한 15년 계약에 따라 2016년 한국에 왔다. 슈바오는 2020년 태어난 푸바오와 2023년 태어난 쌍둥이 루이바오·후이바오의 여동생이기도 하다
