Embassy calls for community service in tribute to South African leader’s legacy
The South African Embassy in Seoul marked Nelson Mandela International Day on Monday with a call for community service, honoring the late president’s legacy of social justice and public service.
The event, held in collaboration with the Kim Dae-jung Presidential Library and Museum, included participants from Eden I Ville, a children’s home in Seoul.
Nelson Mandela International Day is observed annually on July 18, Mandela’s birthday.
The UN General Assembly established the observance in 2009 in recognition of his contribution to peace and freedom.
Central to the global observance is the 67 Minutes Campaign, which encourages people to devote at least 67 minutes to community service, representing Mandela’s 67 years of public service and struggle for social justice.
South African Ambassador to Korea Sindiswa Mququ said the Seoul gathering sought to carry forward Mandela’s commitment to humanity and those facing poverty and deprivation.
“We appreciate Eden I Ville’s interest in learning more about our country and our national icon,” Mququ said.
She quoted Mandela’s call for individuals to help improve the lives of others: “It is in your hands to make our world a better one for all, especially the poor, vulnerable and marginalized.”
The message is the theme of the 2026 Nelson Mandela International Day, she said.
