Netflix may have found an unexpected new role in the global gaming ecosystem: a launchpad for blockbuster game reveals.

On Friday, Netflix uploaded a roughly 26-minute video titled “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look,” featuring gameplay footage captured on PlayStation 5. The footage showcases the fictional Vice City, the setting for the upcoming game, as protagonists Jason and Lucia traverse various scenarios.

Grand Theft Auto VI is the long-awaited follow-up to Grand Theft Auto V. Released in 2013, it has sold more than 230 million copies worldwide, making it one of the bestselling games of all time. The sequel is scheduled for release on Nov. 19 and has been among the most closely watched upcoming titles in the global games industry.

What made the latest reveal particularly notable was the choice of venue. Big game titles typically debut gameplay footage through major industry showcases. Rockstar Games, the publisher behind the GTA franchise, however, chose Netflix for the global premiere, marking the first known instance of a major game using the streamer as the exclusive platform for a new gameplay reveal.

The move was particularly striking given the timing. The global games industry had gathered in Germany for Gamescom 2026, held Wednesday to Monday, yet GTA VI was absent from the event’s lineup. Gamescom is the world's largest annual video game event and trade fair.

The attempt appears to have paid off. “Grand Theft Auto VI: An Extended Look” quickly climbed Netflix’s viewing charts following its debut, ranking No. 2 among the platform’s most-watched movies globally as of Sunday and No. 4 in Korea as of Monday.

It remains unclear whether Rockstar approached Netflix about the partnership or whether the initiative originated with the streamer. Netflix has not officially disclosed details of the arrangement.

For Rockstar, however, the appeal may have been less about generating awareness for an already established franchise and more about reaching consumers who do not typically engage with dedicated gaming platforms.

“GTA is already an enormously well-known franchise among the general public, so from Rockstar’s perspective, simply being the first to unveil a new installment on Netflix does not necessarily carry greater significance than debuting it at a major gaming exhibition or established industry event,” said Wi Jung-hyun, a business professor at Chung-Ang University and head of the Korea Game Society.

"Rather, I think Netflix’s enormous user base was the more important factor. In particular, what makes this significant is that Netflix’s audience is substantially different from the existing gaming audience, giving Rockstar access to a new group of consumers," Wi said.

The partnership also gives Netflix a strategic opportunity.

“Netflix is already in the gaming business, and the company continues to expand its gaming platform. ... From that perspective, given that Netflix is already developing its gaming business, its collaboration with GTA to showcase gaming content can be seen as a meaningful move,” said Wi.

Netflix initially entered gaming through mobile titles in 2021, offering subscribers games at no additional cost, many of them tied to its original entertainment properties.

Its early gaming push encompassed a wide range of experiments, from indie titles to games based on Netflix shows. However, the company subsequently began restructuring its gaming operation and, in 2023, appointed Alain Tascan, a former executive vice president of game development at Epic Games, as president of games.

The strategy has since evolved beyond its initial mobile focus. Beginning in late 2025, Netflix began expanding its efforts to make games playable on TVs. The company now identifies four broad pillars for its games business: kids, party, narrative and mainstream titles.

According to Wi, the video's rapid rise on Netflix’s global viewing charts demonstrates that a major game can generate significant engagement on a platform built primarily around film and television.

“Reaching a ranking this high can be seen as a sign that this collaboration was quite successful. I believe not only global game companies but Netflix as well will actively consider pursuing similar types of collaborations going forward, taking this case as an example," said Wi.

"Given the success of the GTA 6 case, I think major Korean game companies may also take an interest in and consider using streaming platforms as a way to showcase their games in the future.”
