Jeonju International Film Festival is teaming with Universal Pictures on a special program built around "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie," Illumination's $110 million sequel to the 2023 franchise starter "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," due in Korean theaters April 29.

Running alongside the 27th edition of the festival, the program brings themed activations and screenings to Jeonju's Film Street and Hanok Village tourist district. The program is geared toward families visiting Jeonju over the May holiday stretch, organizers said.

A pop-up store drawing on the sequel's expanded cast — Yoshi, Bowser Jr. and Princess Rosalina alongside returning characters Mario, Luigi, Peach and Bowser — will run April 30 through May 8 on the ground floor of Megabox Jeonju Gaeksa.

The film's predecessor, "The Super Mario Bros. Movie," will screen outdoors for free at the same venue from May 1 to May 5, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Photo ops round out the slate. An 8-meter inflatable Yoshi egg will anchor a photo spot along Jeonju Movie Street, with a shooting-star-themed boat setup in the Hanok Village.

Directed by Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic, "The Super Mario Galaxy Movie" opened in North America on April 1 and has grossed $762 million worldwide to date, making it the year's top earner.

The 27th Jeonju IFF runs April 29 through May 8 at venues across the city of Jeonju.
