Seoul's main subway operator said Tuesday it is overhauling the display systems of Lines No. 2, 3 and 4 for passenger convenience, a key change being constant display of the next immediate destination of the train in all of the screens onboard.
The current display system has the next destination on display for about a minute before arriving, interchanging the display with other information such as about which door will open, transfer options and the map of the subway network. The new system will display the next station on the top of the screen at all times.
The project worth 237 million won ($171,000) will be conducted on 634 recently-deployed train cars, with the revamp of the Lines No. 2 and 3 completed by June and Line No. 4 completed by December, according to the Seoul Metro. It is a follow-up to the overhaul on 550 train cars across the Lines No. 2, 5 and 7 last year.
Officials said the advanced display system will also be installed in the cars to be newly deployed in the future.
The display system at stations across Lines No. 2 through 8 will also undergo an overhaul, with the main screen displaying the pertinent information related to the arriving train such as the current location and final destination. Public announcements, the crowdedness of the station and other information will be displayed on a separate screen.
Fifty stations of Line No. 2 will be the first to undergo the renovation by June of this year, followed by 60 stations across Lines No. 3 and 4 by December, 74 stations of Lines No. 5 and 8 by 2027, and 81 stations of the Lines No. 6 and 7 by 2028.
The subway authorities have already completed the operation on 10 stations of Line No. 1.
