A drunk driver who fled after causing multiple collisions in Incheon was caught by police officers, with the help of two civilians who assisted in chasing down the suspect and blocked his path to stop him from escaping.
The National Police Agency on Friday posted a video of an Oct. 1, 2024, altercation in Bupyeong-gu Incheon, in which officers from Incheon Bupyeong Police Station were attempting to apprehend a suspected drunk driver. The suspect fled the scene, colliding with two cars, injuring the drivers and destroying a barrier at a parking lot in the chase that occurred shortly after midnight.
Senior Inspector Yun Gwan-pil and Assistant Inspector Lee Jin-woo caught up to the driver at around 12:37 a.m. and arrested him. The suspect was tested to have a 0.199 percent blood alcohol content, well over the 0.08 percent that warrants revocation of one's driver's license.
Providing crucial help to the arrest were two men on motorcycles, who chased the suspect while guiding officers on a patrol car. After police managed to chase the suspect into an alley, the two motorists blocked the car from behind.
The NPA touted the two motorists as “heroes,” saying, “Fantastic teamwork by the two police officers and two motorists helped put a stop to the dangerous driving by the drunk driver.”
The suspect faces charges of drunk driving, hit-and-run after inflicting injury and failing to take relevant actions after causing a traffic accident.
