Supporters of President Yoon Suk Yeol gathered near the presidential residence in Hannam-dong, Yongsan-gu, Seoul, Friday, as investigators from the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials moved to take the president into custody for questioning. The demonstrators, some of whom were lying on the road near the residence's main gate, waved national flags and held signs denouncing the investigation.
The CIO announced on Thursday that it would execute the court-issued arrest warrant for President Yoon before its expiration on Monday. Yoon faces charges of insurrection and abuse of power.
However, the CIO announced at around 1:30 p.m. Friday it had suspended execution of the warrant, citing safety concerns amid the standoff. It added that the team would consider how to proceed after a review of the situation.
