South Korea's volleyball association banned four players for life Monday over their alleged involvement in a match-fixing scandal.
Three players from the KEPCO45 team and one from the military club Sangmu allegedly took bribes in return for trying to rig the results of games in recent years, an official at the Korean Volleyball Federation told The Associated Press on condition of anonymity, citing department rules.
Prosecutors investigating the scandal recently told the federation the players confessed to their wrongdoing during questioning, the official said.
The players will be banned from appearing in games and assuming official volleyball-related jobs, he said.
Another player with the Samsung Bluefangs club, who has voluntarily admitted to his involvement in the scandal, was temporarily suspended until a prosecution probe is finalized, the official said.
The Defense Ministry said Monday it has decided to bar its Sangmu team from taking part in the ongoing professional volleyball league.
At least seven people, including two retired KEPCO45 players and a gambling broker, have been investigated over the scandal and five of them have been arrested by prosecutors, according to the official and a prosecution office at the southeastern city of Daegu.
The broker allegedly placed bets on an illegal online gambling website after the results were arranged, officials at the Daegu prosecution office said. It's not known whether all the players implicated in the scandal received bribes from the same broker.
Last year, South Korea's football league was hit by a massive match-fixing scandal, with nearly 80 players and brokers convicted. (AP)
'승부조작' 배구 선수 4명 영구 제명
프로배구 승부 조작에 연루된 현역 선수 4명이 영구 제명됐다.
한국배구연맹(KOVO)은 13일 서울 상암동 연맹 사무실에서 상벌위원회를 열어 이 번 사건에 가담한 것으로 알려진 KEPCO 주전급 선수 3명과 상무 소속 1명 등 4명에 대해 영구제명이라는 극약 처방을 내렸다.
또 상무시절 승부조작에 가담했다고 자진 신고한 삼성화재 소속 A 선수에 대해 서는 검찰의 최종 발표가 나올 때까지 선수 신분자격을 일시 정지한다고 밝혔다.
영구 제명된 선수들은 배구연맹이 주관하는 각종 대회에서 선수는 물론 지도자 로 활약할 수 없어 프로배구판을 완전히 떠나야 한다.
연맹은 A 선수 또한 검찰의 수사 결과 연루 사실이 드러나면 이들과 똑같은 징 계를 받을 것이라고 설명했다.
이번 사건을 수사 중인 대구지검은 KEPCO 전·현직 선수 5명과 상무 선수 1명 등 6명을 불러 조사했다.
이중 은퇴 선수 2명을 포함해 세 명을 구속했고, KEPCO 현역 선수 두 명에 대해 서도 구속 영장을 청구했으나 기각됐다.
브로커로 활동한 혐의를 받는 상무 선수에 대해서도 구속영장 청구를 검토 중이 다.
검찰의 수사가 진행 중이고 재판에서 이들의 혐의가 확정되려면 상당한 시일이 예상되는 상황에서 연맹이 선수의 생명을 완전히 끊는 영구 제명 징계를 내린 것은 상당히 이례적인 일이다.
박상설 연맹 사무총장은 "구속된 선수도 있고, 구속 영장이 기각된 선수도 있지 만 검찰을 통해 충분히 확인한 결과를 토대로 이들을 영구제명하게 됐다"고 말했다.
그는 "프로배구가 존속할 수 있도록 토대를 마련하는 차원에서 엄정 징계가 불 가피했다"고 덧붙였다.
박 사무총장은 "상무 현역 선수 중 2~3명이 사건에 연루된 정황이 있어 오늘 연 맹 차원에서 군 변호사를 선임, 진상을 알아보고 있다"며 비리의 온상이 된 상무 선 수단을 적극적으로 조사하고 있다고 설명했다.
연맹은 추가로 승부 조작에 연루된 선수가 나오면 적법 절차에 따라 영구제명된 선수들과 동등하게 징계할 방침이다.
구속된 은퇴 선수에 대해 박 사무총장은 "소속 회사 징계위원회의 결정과 연맹 이사회의 제재안을 봐야겠지만 연맹이 주관하는 모든 일에 절대 끼어들 수 없도록 규제할 계획"이라고 말했다.
연맹은 아울러 대한배구협회와 논의해 영구제명된 선수들이 아마추어 배구에도 발을 붙일 수 없도록 하는 제재안을 마련할 것으로 알려졌다.
한편 연맹은 검찰 수사와는 별도로 선수들의 자진 신고를 15일까지 받기로 했다 .
