Ban’s visit fans political speculation

반기문 방한, 정치적 추측 부채질해

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon on Wednesday gave a strong indication that he may decide to run for president of South Korea, saying he plans to contemplate his next step once his tenure ends.

수요일 반기문 유엔 사무총장이 임기가 끝나면 다음 행보를 고민하겠다고 말해 대선에 출마할 수도 있음을 강력히 시사했다.

“I’m returning back as a Korean on Jan. 1 next year,”he said during a meeting with members of the Kwanhun Club, a Seoul-based association of senior journalists, on the sidelines of the Jeju Forum. “What I ought to do as a Korean citizen, I will think about that then (when I return) and make a decision and seek advice if necessary.”

제주포럼 참석을 위해 방한한 그는 서울의 중진 언론인 협회인 관훈클럽 간담회에서 “내년 1월 1일이면 한국사람이 된다”며 “한국 시민으로서 어떤 일을 해야 하느냐는 그 때 가서 고민 결심하고 필요하면 조언을 구할 수도 있다”고 말했다.

The remarks came amid rampant speculation over his potential bid for next year’s presidential election as the flag bearer of the ruling Saenuri Party.

이러한 발언은 그가 새누리당 후보로서 내년 대선에 출마할 가능성에 대한 추측이 무성한 가운데 나왔다.

During the session, he mostly reiterated he hopes to “achieve a good ending”as the U.N. chief, but appeared to be striking a far more proactive tone. In a rare move, Ban took time to discuss the domestic political situation.

간담회에서 그는 유엔총장으로서 ‘유종의 미’를 거두고 싶다는 말을 주로 반복했으나 훨씬 적극적인 어조로 보였다. 그는 드물게도 국내 정치상황에 대해 논의하기도 했다.

“The nation is in fact extremely divided. Political leaders must make more efforts to integrate the country. ... Somebody, who is ready to give up everything for national integration, should come forward and declare grand integration,”Ban said.

"사실 국가가 너무 분열돼 있다. 정치 지도자들이 국가 통합을 위해 더 노력해야 한다. 누군가는 대통합을 선언하고 나와 모든 것을 버려야 한다”고 말했다.

"When I come back from the U.N., I will ponder more about my role as a citizen. But right now, it would be most appropriate for me to successfully take on my current calling and report back to you,”he told the attending senior journalists.

그는 참석한 중진 언론인들에게 ”유엔에서 돌아오면 국민으로서 역할을 더 생각해보겠다. 지금 현재는 맡은 소명을 성공적으로 맡다가 여러분께 보고할 수 있는 게 바람직한 게 아니냐”고 말했다.

Widely popular among the public here, Ban has posted high ratings in polls and never ruled out the possibility of his foray into politics, dodging a direct answer each time.

국내에서 폭넓은 인기를 얻고 있는 반 총장은 여론 조사에서 높은 지지율을 보이고 있으며 매번 직접적인 대답을 피하며 정치 입문 가능성을 결코 배제하지 않고 있다.

The former South Korean foreign minister touched down on Jejudo Island in the afternoon and is slated to deliver a keynote speech at the three-day conference that opened earlier in the day.

외교부 장관이었던 반 총장은 이날 오후 제주도에 도착했으며 이날 오전에 개막한 3일 간의 포럼에서 기조연설을 할 예정이다.

Following the press meeting, he joined a welcome dinner hosted by Unification Minister Hong Yong-pyo where some senior Saenuri lawmakers attended, including Saenuri Party floor leader Rep. Chung Jin-suk, parliamentary foreign affairs and unification committee chief Rep. Na Kyung-won and pro-President Park Geun-hye figure Rep. Hong Moon-jong.

그는 간담회 후 홍용표 홍용표 통일부 장관이 주최한 환영 만찬에 참석했다. 여기에는 정진석 새누리당 원내대표, 나경원 외교통일위원장, 친박계 홍문종 의원 등 몇몇 새누리당 중진들도 참석했다.

About 45 minutes into the event, Ban walked into the hall with a band of policy and protocol aides and security guards, enticing everyone’s attention and a flood of camera flashes.

만찬이 45분 정도 지났을 무렵 반 총장은 모두의 시선과 카메라 세례를 받으며 정책. 의전 보좌관, 경호원들과 함께 홀로 걸어들어갔다.

As the dinner inched toward the end, he was spotted speaking exclusively for at least over five minutes with Hong Yong-pyo and Chung, who apparently switched his seating position so as to be closer to the secretary-general.

만찬이 끝나갈 무렵 그는 가까이로 자리를 옮긴 홍용표 의원, 정 원내대표와 단독으로 이야기하는 모습이 포착됐다.

In his brief congratulatory remarks, Ban expressed his respect for “big and difficult decisions”made over the last few months by Park and her administration on inter-Korean relations, referring to Seoul’s pullout from a joint factory park and imposition of standalone sanctions. But he stressed the significance of talks in tackling the situation.

그는 짧은 축사에서 개성공단 철수, 독자적 제재 부과 등 지난 몇 개월 간 박근혜 정부가 내린 ‘크고 어려운 결정’을 이해한다면서도 대화의 중요성을 강조했다.

“Heightened tensions on the Korean Peninsula make this a sensitive visit for me,”Ban said. “I’m convinced that a diplomatic solution is the only way to resolve the complex and dangerous situation on the Korean Peninsula. At the same time, diplomacy must be firmly based on respect by the DPRK (North Korea) for international law, particularly the decisions of the Security Council.”

반 총장은 “한반도 긴장 고조로 이번 방한이 민감한 것이 됐다”며 “외교적 해법이 한반도의 복잡하고 위험한 상황을 해결하기 위한 유일한 길이라고 확신한다. 동시에 외교는 북한이 국제법과 특히 유엔 안보리 결정을 존중하는 데서 확고히 자리잡아야 한다”고 말했다. (코리아헤럴드 05월26일자 기사)
