An orphanage in Cambodia has been shut down after officials said they received complaints of abuse and suspected human trafficking at the facility.
Authorities working with two non-governmental organizations said they removed 21 children from the unregistered Love In Action orphanage in Phnom Penh Friday, The Phnom Penh Post reported Monday.
Five children escaped from the facility Feb. 26 and another seven on March 14, said Gratianne Quade, communications officer for SISHA, one of the non-profit organizations involved in the raid.
The group Mlup Russey also took part in closing down the orphanage.
Children from the orphanage reported they had been physically abused and that others had disappeared. They described conditions as overcrowded and with inadequate food.
Ruth Golder and Tracey Golder, the mother and daughter who operated the facility, had not yet been arrested as of Sunday, the two non-profits involved in the raid said.
The orphanage's website said it was largely funded by Christian groups in Australia. (UPI)

프놈 펜 포스트가 보도한 바에 따르면, 당국은 프놈 펜에 위치한 러브인 액션 고아원을 폐쇄하고 아동 21명을 피신시켰다고 한다. 이 고아원은 허가를 받지 않은 시설이며, 호주에 있는 기독교 단체들로부터 운영자금을 받았다.정부 당국은 비정부기관 (NGO) 두 곳과 협력하여 해당 고아원을 습격 후 아이들을 구출해냈다.
구출된 아이들은 자신들이 신체적으로 학대를 당했으며 몇몇 아이들이 “사라졌다”라고 증언한 것으로 알려졌다. 이들은 고아원에 너무 많은 원생들이 머물고 있었으며 음식도 부족했다고 증언했다.
이번 구출작전에 참가한 NGO 중 하나인 시샤 (SISHA) 측은 지난달 26일 원생 다섯 명이 탈출했으며, 이번달 14일에 또 일곱 명이 탈출했다고 전했다.
한편 해당 고아원을 운영하던 루스 골더와 트레이시 골더 모녀는 아직 체포되지 않은 것으로 알려졌다.
