The number of crimes reported in South Korea rose more than 3 percent on-year to exceed 2 million cases in 2013 with nearly 77 percent of the offenders arrested, government data showed Sunday.
A total of 2,006,682 crimes were reported in the country last year, up 3.2 percent from the previous year, according to the data by the Supreme Public Prosecutors' Office.
Of the total criminals, 76.9 percent were arrested with 41.9 percent of them apprehended within one day.
More than half of the offenses, or 1.06 million cases, were in violation of the criminal code, with the remainder in breach of special laws.
A total of 16,638 civil servants were booked for committing various crimes last year, with police officers accounting for the largest portion at 1,633.
Foreign offenders numbered 43,923 in 2013. Chinese were the biggest number at 24,045, followed by Americans with 3,089, Vietnamese with 2,933 and Mongolians with 2,356.
A total of 26,919 sexual assaults were reported last year, with child victims numbering 1,051.
Traffic-related crimes came to 185,770 last year, resulting in 3,233 deaths, according to the data. (Yonhap)
