Third ‘Along With the Gods’ film set to shoot in 2027
“Along With the Gods,” the fantasy series about the dead standing trial in the afterlife, is getting a third film, the production team announced Tuesday.
The new installment, tentatively titled "Along With the Gods: Life and Death," is in preproduction, with shooting slated for the second half of 2027.
According to the logline, the movie follows Sol, a woman caught between life and death who journeys across nine worlds in search of what she left behind.
Casting has not been announced. It remains unclear whether the stars of the first two films will reprise their roles.
The franchise is based on a popular webcomic that ran on Naver, Korea's biggest search engine and web platform, from 2010 to 2012.
In a country where 10 million admissions is considered the threshold for a megahit, the series became the first franchise in Korean film history to clear that bar twice. Its first installment "The Two Worlds" (2017) sold 14.41 million tickets; "The Last 49 Days" drew 12.27 million a year later.
Ha Jung-woo, Ju Ji-hoon and Kim Hyang-gi starred in both films as grim reapers who guide the dead through the afterlife. Cha Tae-hyun played the lead in the first film, while Ma Dong-suk led the sequel.
Kim Yong-hwa, who directed the first two films, will return for the third. His most recent film, the 2023 space drama “The Moon,” sold just 510,000 tickets against the roughly 6 million it needed to break even.
A release date has not been set.
