Youn Yuh-jung misses out on Emmy win for 'Beef' Season 2

Veteran South Korean actor Youn Yuh-jung has exited this year's Emmy race for outstanding supporting actress in a limited or anthology series or movie.

Youn — an acclaimed actor who made history in 2021 as the first Korean actor to win an Academy Award, taking home Best Supporting Actress for her role in the film "Minari" — earned the Emmy nomination in July for her portrayal of Chairwoman Park in Netflix’s "Beef" Season 2.

However, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences, which presents the Emmys, awarded the category to Linda Cardellini for her role in "DTF St. Louis." The category winner was unveiled ahead of Monday's main ceremony.

In "Beef" Season 2, Youn plays a powerful businessperson who devises an elaborate criminal scheme to protect her husband.

The series, which debuted on Netflix on April 16, explores the unraveling of two married couples as they grapple with mounting crises, ranging from divorce to criminal developments that lead to murder. Korean-American filmmaker Lee Sung-jin returned to create and direct the second installment.

"Beef" Season 2 scored 16 Emmy nominations this year and has secured three wins so far, taking home awards for sound mixing, sound editing, and costume design.

The series remains in contention in the remaining categories, including outstanding lead actor and outstanding lead actress in a limited or anthology series or movie, for Oscar Isaac and Carey Mulligan, respectively, for their roles as Josh and Lindsay. The second season was also nominated for outstanding limited or anthology series.

As one of the premier US honors recognizing television excellence, this year's Emmys span three days. The first two nights, Sept. 5 and Sept. 6, were prerecorded.

The main categories, including the acting and best series awards, will be announced at Monday’s ceremony, which will air live on NBC.
