HK inno.N said Monday its gastroesophageal reflux disease treatment K-CAB Tab. 50mg has become the world’s first oral finished drug to receive an Environmental Product Declaration.
The South Korean pharmaceutical company said it received the EPD certificate at a ceremony in Oslo, Norway, on Wednesday.
An EPD measures a product’s environmental impact throughout its life cycle based on international standards. The results are publicly disclosed after third-party verification. It is also known as an “environmental ID card” for products because it provides an objective assessment of their environmental impact.
The EPD for the treatment was registered in June on EPD Global, an international EPD platform.
The company completed a life cycle assessment with ISO 14040 and ISO 14044, which set general principles and requirements for LCA. The International Sustainability Certification Center independently verified the environmental declaration based on ISO 14025.
The British Standards Institution published PAS 2090:2025, an international standard for pharmaceuticals, in November, addressing the lack of pharmaceutical-specific guidelines. HK inno.N obtained the EPD for its product based on the new standard.
K-CAB has been launched in 20 countries and has entered 55 markets through technology licensing or finished drug exports.
The certification allows the company to provide verified environmental data to customers and buyers in markets including Latin America and Asia. The data will address customers’ ESG requirements as supply chains emissions reporting and environmental due diligence continue to grow.
“Obtaining an EPD shortly after standards for pharmaceutical LCAs were established represents a meaningful ESG achievement for Korea’s pharmaceutical and biotech industry,” an HK inno.N official said.
“We will expand environmental assessments to key products and further strengthen environmental information management across our product portfolio.”
