Former Spain head coach Robert Moreno was named interim head coach of the South Korean men's national soccer team Tuesday.

The Korea Football Association approved Moreno's appointment during a board meeting at Korea Football Park in Cheonan, about 56 miles south of Seoul.

Moreno, 48, will lead South Korea in its next six international matches.

South Korea will host Ecuador on Sept. 24, Uruguay on Sept. 28, Venezuela on Oct. 2 and Uzbekistan on Oct. 6. The KFA is also seeking to schedule two more matches during the Nov. 9-17 FIFA international window.

After the November matches, South Korea will compete in the AFC Asian Cup in Saudi Arabia beginning in January.

The KFA said Moreno's contract runs through Nov. 27, but he could be appointed permanent head coach for the Asian Cup depending on the team's performance this fall.

The position had been vacant since Hong Myung-bo resigned in late June following the country's group-stage exit from the FIFA World Cup.

Rather than rush to appoint a permanent replacement before the September and October matches, the KFA opted to hire an interim coach.

Moreno coached his native Spain for nine matches in 2019 while Luis Enrique was on leave. He later coached AS Monaco in France, Granada in Spain and FC Sochi in Russia.

Moreno previously worked as a scout for FC Barcelona and served as Enrique's assistant at AS Roma, Celta Vigo and Barcelona. (Yonhap)
