Foreign patients in Korea top 2m for first time

한국 찾은 외국인 환자 200만명 첫 돌파

The number of international patients visiting South Korea surpassed 2 million for the first time last year, setting a new record, government data showed.

지난해 한국을 방문한 외국인 환자 수가 처음으로 200만명을 돌파하며 역대 최고치를 기록했다고 정부 자료가 밝혔다.

According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, 2.01 million overseas patients sought medical treatment in Korea in 2025, the highest figure since related statistics began in 2009.

보건복지부에 따르면 2025년 한국에서 의료 서비스를 받은 외국인 환자는 201만명으로, 관련 통계 집계가 시작된 2009년 이후 가장 많은 수치였다.

After falling to around 110,000 during the COVID-19 pandemic, the number has rebounded sharply since 2023, posting record highs for three consecutive years.

코로나19 팬데믹 기간 약 11만명 수준까지 감소했던 외국인 환자 수는 2023년 이후 급격히 회복하며 3년 연속 최고 기록을 경신했다.

Patients from 201 countries visited Korea. Chinese visitors accounted for the largest share at 30.8 percent, followed by Japanese at 29.8 percent, Taiwanese at 9.2 percent, Americans at 8.6 percent and Thais at 2.9 percent.

201개국 출신 환자들이 한국을 찾았다. 중국인이 30.8%로 가장 큰 비중을 차지했으며, 이어 일본인 29.8%, 대만인 9.2%, 미국인 8.6%, 태국인 2.9% 순이었다.

The sharp increase was driven by rising demand for cosmetic procedures, especially dermatology, along with a recovery in tourism.

이번 급증은 관광 회복과 함께 피부과를 중심으로 한 미용 시술 수요 증가가 이끈 것으로 분석됐다.

The number of US patients also jumped 70.4 percent on-year to 173,363, the highest level since 2009.

미국인 환자 수도 전년 대비 70.4% 증가한 17만 3363명을 기록하며 2009년 이후 최고 수준에 도달했다.
