Field trips fade in Seoul schools

Only 3 in 10 elementary, middle and high schools in Seoul have conducted or planned field trips this year, according to data from the Seoul Metropolitan Office of Education, highlighting a sharp decline in student experiential learning programs.
서울시교육청 데이터에 따르면 초등학교, 중학교, 고등학교 10곳 중 3곳만이 올해 현장체험학습을 실시하거나 계획 중이며, 이는 체험학습 프로그램의 급격한 감소세를 보여준다.
As of 2026, just 407 out of 1,331 schools, or 31 percent, planned one-day experiential learning activities, down significantly from 86 percent in 2023. Participation has fallen precipitously in recent years.
2026년 기준 1,331개 학교 중 31%인 407개만이 일일 체험학습을 계획하였으며, 이는 2023년에 비해 86% 줄어든 수치이다. 참여율 역시 최근 몇 년 사이 뚝 떨어졌다.
The decline comes as many teachers have grown reluctant to organize field trips due to concerns over safety accidents and complaints from parents.
이러한 감소세는 안전사고와 학부모 민원으로 인해 체험학습 실시를 꺼려하는 교사의 수가 증가하면서 발생한다.
By school level, middle schools recorded the highest participation rates, while elementary and high schools posted the lowest rate for overnight programs.
학교별로는 중학교가 가장 높은 참여율을 기록했으며, 초등학교와 고등학교가 1박 이상의 프로그램에 대해 참여율이 가장 낮았다.
