~라고 알려져 있다

If something is known to be X, then it is X. If it isn't certain that it is X, then by definition it isn't something that is known. Unfortunately, that's often not how it is used in Korea. Often the more accurate translation is "thought to be" or "reputed to be ."

Pretty much every statement in a news article should be backed up with a source, and sweeping statements should be avoided. So, a direct translation of this phrase (it is known) simply does not work. When describing something that the general public considers to be true, or a commonly known fact/story, it’s safer to go with a phrase such as “many believe” or “many consider”.

For example, “many adults know Santa is not a real person” communicates a widely known fact while also acknowledging that there may actually be adults out there who still believe him to be real.

In additions to the problematic use cases already described, this phrase can be used to describe what is asserted to be a common opinion. For example, if you’re traveling and see a hotel that looks much cheaper than others, someone might explain that “it’s known to be in a rough neighborhood.”

You could also get more specific to add to credibility, like when inviting a friend to a rundown-looking restaurant, tell them “it’s known by taxi drivers to have the best altang in the city.”
