Solitary deaths increased 7% last year
고독사 전년 대비 7% 증가
South Korea recorded nearly 4,000 solitary deaths in 2024, a 7.2 percent increase from 3,661 in 2023, amounting to 1.09 deaths per 100 overall deaths. More than 80 percent of the victims were men, with those in their 50s and 60s accounting for over 60 percent of all cases.
한국에서는 2024년 고독사가 약 4,000건 발생해, 2023년 3,661건보다 7.2% 증가했다. 이는 전체 사망자 100명당 1.09명에 해당하는 수치다. 사망자의 80% 이상이 남성이었으며, 50~60대가 전체의 60% 이상을 차지했다.
Suicide accounted for 13.4 percent of all lonely deaths, but the proportion was higher among people in their 20s and 30s, among whom roughly half of the cases were tied to suicide. Most incidents occurred in houses (48.9 percent) and apartments (19.7 percent), while smaller or more vulnerable housing such as one-room units, officetels, and gosiwons saw a rising share.
고독사 중 자살이 차지하는 비율은 13.4%였으나, 20~30대에서는 약 절반이 자살과 관련된 것으로 나타나 더 높은 비중을 보였다. 발생 장소는 주택이 48.9%로 가장 많았고, 아파트가 19.7%로 뒤를 이었다. 반면 원룸, 오피스텔, 고시원 등 소형·취약 주거 형태에서 발생하는 비중은 증가하는 추세를 보였다.
Landlords or security personnel discovered 43.1 percent of the cases, followed by family members (26.6 percent) and neighbors (12 percent).
발견 주체는 임대인이나 보안요원이 43.1%로 가장 많았으며, 가족(26.6%), 이웃(12%) 순으로 나타났다.
