외국인

‘외국인’이라는 표현은 상황에 따라 의미 범위가 지나치게 넓어, 누구를 어떤 맥락에서 지칭하는지 불분명해질 수 있습니다. 경우에 따라서는 ‘우리와 그들’을 구분하는 듯한 불필요한 거리감이나 경계의 뉘앙스를 만들기도 합니다. 그래서 이 단어를 사용해야 하는 이유가 분명한지, 혹은 더 구체적이고 정확한 표현으로 대체할 수는 없는지 먼저 점검해보는 것이 좋습니다.

If referring to someone who has permanently moved to a country other than the one they were born in, the word immigrant is used, while migrant generally refers to people moving to another country (temporarily and/or permanently) for work or improved quality of life. If you’re introducing or talking about someone, you’re more likely to just share their nationality if relevant: “This is Erin, she’s from New Zealand.” or “My roommate is Kenyan.”

The first point is to think about why the term is being used and if it serves a useful function. Generally, when the word is being used in an exclusionary way or to emphasize that someone is not part of the “in group,” it’d be better not to. If it is relevant, it often works better to use “foreign” as an adjective attached to a more specific term: foreign businesspeople, foreign nationals, foreign spouses, etc.

This is why there was a move to use "expat" about 15 years ago. That term has fallen out of fashion, and "foreigner" has become more common again. At The Korea Herald, we try to avoid it, but we use foreign as an adjective, but it can often be dropped or switched for a more precise word, such as "British."
