[김대균의 영어 산책] 일본영어전문가 한국방문 특집(3) – 한국을 50번 이상 방문하신 Yuko Naruse 선생님의 한국 여행기와 영어학습법

Dear Korean friends,

Hello. My name is Yuko Naruse. I started teaching English at a small language school in Osaka, Japan, when I was 45. You may wonder―why so late? Let me share the story of how such an “old” English teacher was born in Osaka.

The story goes back to 1995, when I visited Seoul for the first time. I was shocked to see that all the signs downtown were filled with mysterious letters to me. I could understand nothing, even though Korea is our neighboring country. I strongly felt that Korea was so near, yet so far. However, one woman selling egg sandwiches at a stall in Namdaemun Market smiled at me and served me a hot sandwich and a paper cup of sweet coffee. She spoke neither Japanese nor English, but her warmhearted attitude melted my frozen mind.

This experience inspired me to take action. I began learning Korean by myself, and a month later I visited Namdaemun Market again to say to her in Korean, “Thank you. Your sandwich is the best in the world.” Since then, our friendship has continued for 30 years, and I have visited Korea more than fifty times. I went there not to chase Korean pop stars, but simply to say hello to my friends whom I truly wanted to see.

The reason I became an English teacher at the age of 45 is that learning Korean reminded me of how wonderful it is to learn a language. Now I know that alphabets can bewilder my younger students just as Korean letters once bewildered me. I want to remove such anxiety from them.

Then, how can I help English learners feel more confident and less anxious? Looking back on my own English learning, vocabulary was the part I struggled with the most because just memorizing words was boring and endless. So, how did I overcome it? I have two keys: Exploring etymology and Gathering synonyms.

For example, when I come across the word impede, I follow these steps.

1. Check the meaning

impede=to make it difficult for somebody or something to move or go forward

2. Check the origin

in-=in, into ped=foot

3. Collect the words with the same origin

pedal, pedestrian, pedicure, expedition, centipede

4. Collect the synonyms

hinder, obstruct, hamper, stop, block

5. Summarize in a simple drawing

These steps help the words stay in my head longer ―and make vocabulary building fun.

Lastly, there is a Korean proverb I love: “시작이 반이다”(“Starting is half the task”).

Dear readers, you have already opened the door to the world of English, so you should be proud of yourselves. Sometimes you might feel lost because you cannot see your goal. But don’t worry―you have already made it halfway. I believe that both Korean and Japanese people are among the hardest workers in the world. 이야기는 1995년으로 거슬러 올라갑니다. 제가 처음 서울을 방문했을 때, 시내 간판들이 제게는 전혀 알 수 없는 신비한 글자들로 가득 차 있었습니다. 한국은 바로 옆 나라인데도 아무것도 이해할 수 없다는 사실에 큰 충격을 받았습니다. 저는 ‘가깝지만 멀다’라는 느낌을 강하게 받았습니다. 그런데 남대문 시장에서 계란 샌드위치를 파는 한 아주머니가 제게 미소를 지으며 뜨거운 샌드위치와 달콤한 커피 한 잔을 내주셨습니다. 그녀는 일본어도 영어도 할 줄 몰랐지만, 따뜻한 태도 덕분에 제 얼어붙은 마음은 녹아내렸습니다.

이 경험은 저에게 큰 행동의 동기가 되었습니다. 저는 독학으로 한국어 공부를 시작했고, 한 달 뒤 남대문 시장을 다시 찾아가 한국어로 “고맙습니다. 당신의 샌드위치가 세상에서 제일 맛있습니다.”라고 말했습니다. 그 이후로 우리 우정은 30년간 이어졌고, 저는 한국을 50번 이상 방문했습니다. 제가 한국에 간 이유는 K-팝 스타를 좇기 위해서가 아니라, 진심으로 만나고 싶은 친구들에게 인사를 하기 위해서였습니다.

제가 45세에 영어 교사가 된 이유도 여기서 비롯됩니다. 한국어 학습은 언어를 배우는 일이 얼마나 멋진 경험인지 저에게 다시 일깨워주었습니다. 이제 저는 알파벳이 제 학생들에게도 한때 한국어 글자가 저를 당황시켰던 것처럼 혼란을 줄 수 있다는 것을 이해합니다. 그래서 저는 학생들의 불안을 덜어주고 싶습니다.

그렇다면 어떻게 하면 영어 학습자들이 더 자신감을 갖고 덜 불안해할 수 있을까요? 제 경험을 돌아보면, 가장 힘들었던 부분은 어휘였습니다. 단순히 단어를 외우는 일은 지루하고 끝이 없었기 때문입니다. 그렇다면 어떻게 극복했을까요? 저는 두 가지 열쇠를 가지고 있습니다: 어원 탐구와 동의어 모으기입니다.

예를 들어 impede라는 단어를 접했을 때 저는 이렇게 공부합니다.

1. 의미 확인

impede = 무언가가 앞으로 나아가거나 움직이는 것을 어렵게 만들다

2. 어원 확인

in- = 안에, 안으로 / ped = 발

3.같은 어원을 가진 단어 모으기

pedal, pedestrian, pedicure, expedition, centipede

4. 동의어 모으기

hinder, obstruct, hamper, stop, block

5. 간단한 그림으로 정리하기 (아래 두 사진 첨부)

이 단계들을 거치면 단어가 머릿속에 더 오래 남고, 어휘 학습이 재미있어집니다.

마지막으로 제가 좋아하는 한국 속담이 있습니다. “시작이 반이다.”
