Hines Ward, the all-time leading receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers, retired from the NFL on Tuesday after 14 seasons, all of them spent with the Steel City club.

Ward caught 1,000 passes for 12,083 yards and 85 touchdowns, all of them Steeler records, and his tenure with the team was eclipsed only by 15-year center Mike Webster.
After being released by the Steelers, Ward said he did not want to play for any other NFL club.
"Today I'm officially retiring as a Pittsburgh Steeler," Ward said. "And as much as I will miss football, my teammates, coaches and the game, I don't want to play in any other uniform.
"The black and gold runs deep in me and I will be a Steeler for life."
Ward helped the Steelers win the 2006 Super Bowl over Seattle, earning Most Valuable Player honors, and helped bring Pittsburgh a record sixth Super Bowl title by defeating Arizona in the 2009 Super Bowl.
Sniffling and fighting back tears, Ward thanked the Steelers' supporters for loyalty through the years.
"You guys have given me the best years of my life," he said. "I will never forget that. Never."
Ward, a third-round selection in the 1998 NFL Draft, caught 14 passes for 244 yards and two touchdowns in three Super Bowl appearances. (AFP)
'한국계' 풋볼 스타 하인스 워드, 은퇴
미국 프로풋볼리그(NFL)에서 14년간 활약해온 한국계 혼혈 선수 하인스 워드(36)가 20일 은퇴를 선언했다.
피츠버그 스틸러스 소속인 워드는 이날 기자회견을 갖고 "오늘, 스틸러스 선수로서 공식 은퇴한다"고 밝히고 "다른 팀 유니폼을 입고 선수생활을 계속하는 것을 원치 않으며, 영원히 스틸러스의 일원으로 남을 것"이라고 말했다.
워드는 2012년 시즌 개막을 앞두고 지난달 스틸러스로부터 방출될 것이라는 통 보를 받았으며 이후 다른 팀으로의 이적을 포기하고 은퇴를 선택했다.
1998년 스틸러스의 지명을 받아 NLF에 입문한 워드는 2006년과 2009년 두 차례 에 걸쳐 NFL 챔피언 결정전인 슈퍼볼에서 우승을 경험했다.
첫 우승 무대인 2006년 슈퍼볼에서는 4쿼터에서 결승 터치다운을 성공시켜 최우수선수(MVP)로 뽑히기도 했다.
그는 선수 생활 내내 피츠버그 스틸러스에서 뛰었고 주 포지션은 공격 포지션의 하나인 와이드 리시버였다.
NFL 올스타전인 프로볼에 4번 출전했을 만큼 기량도 최정상급으로 인정받았다.
지난 1월에는 프로 통산 1천 번째 리셉션(패스를 받아내는 것)을 달성하는 대기록을 세웠다.
워드는 크고 작은 부상으로 이번 시즌 중반 이후 출전 기회를 제대로 잡지 못했 지만 소속 팀의 배려로 시즌 막판에 출전시간을 늘려 마침내 1천 번째 리셉션을 기 록했다.
통산 1천 번 리셉션 기록은 워드가 8번째다.
워드는 주한미군 출신인 아버지와 한국인 김영희씨 사이에서 서울에서 태어났으 나 한 살 때 미국으로 이주해 미국에서 자랐다.
지난해에는 한미관계 홍보대사로 위촉돼 활동하기도 했다. (연합뉴스)
