Retail prices of eggs in South Korea have reached a four-year high, with a 30-egg pack averaging 7,026 won ($5.20) in May — the highest since 2021.

According to the Korea Rural Economic Institute, the farm-gate price of 10 extra-large eggs this month is projected to rise to between 1,850 and 1,950 won — an increase of 12.4 percent to 18.5 percent compared to a year ago. The KREI attributed the continued strength in egg prices to a decline in productivity caused by aging laying hens and outbreaks of low-pathogenic avian influenza and other poultry diseases.
