As the day of the ruling on President Yoon Suk Yeol's impeachment approaches, rival groups demanding either the suspended leader’s removal from office or his reinstatement rallied through the night into Wednesday near the Constitutional Court.
According to unofficial police estimates, at one point around 1,500 pro-impeachment protesters participated in the 24-hour sit-in demonstration set to end at 9 p.m. Wednesday in front of Exit 6 of Anguk Station in Seoul’s Jung-gu.
Yoon’s supporters also set up a protest site near Exit 5 of Anguk Station, about 200 meters away from the pro-impeachment groups. Approximately 200 people participated in this overnight sit-in protest, according to unofficial police estimates.
Among various groups of protesters were Buddhist monks from the Jogye Order of Korean Buddhism who performed full-body prostrations from Jogyesa Temple in central Seoul toward the direction of the Constitutional Court. Protestors took three steps and performed a full prostration, repeating the ritual along the route.
