Saenuri Party presidential candidate Park Geun-hye’s efforts at achieving social unity faced an unexpected hurdle on Tuesday when she was barred from visiting the Jeon Tae-il Foundation.
As Park approached the foundation’s building in Jongno in Seoul, she was blocked by about 60 members of non-governmental organizations and Ssangyong Motor Co. union members, and was forced to return after a short phone conversation with the foundation’s director Park Gye-hyun.
Jeon was an employee of a sewing factory who fought for laborers’ rights, and died on Nov. 13, 1970 when he walked into the fire he had set in an event to burn the country’s labor laws in protest of the lack of reaction from society and the authorities.
At the time, Park’s late father Park Chung-hee was the country’s president.
Park was however warned of her not being welcome at the foundation ahead of the visit.
“We are not ready to receive her as her visit is too unilateral,” Jeon’s family said in a statement released before the visit.
After the failed attempt to visit the foundation, Park went to the site of Jeon’s death. However, as Park was laying flowers on the site of Jeon’s death, Park and her entourage was met by a man who taunted her calling Park a dictator’s daughter saying that she should “know shame” and that she was violating the site.
Since her election as the Saenuri Party presidential candidate, Park has been focusing on reaching out to groups and individuals who are at odds with values associated with herself and the conservative party.
Those she has publicly met with includes a number of high profile individuals such as late former President Kim Dae-jung’s widow Lee Hee-ho. Kim, who had fought against Park Chung-hee’s dictatorial regime, was kidnapped and tortured in the 1970s that left him disabled for life.
However, critics have pointed to her apparently unchanged views on historical issues.
In July, she said that her father’s 1961 coup was “the best choice” he could make at the time. Although the statement was far less outspoken than her 2007 statement referring to the event as “revolution for saving the country,” Park was heavily criticized for the comment.

전태일 열사 유가족, “박근혜 오지마!”
새누리당 박근혜 대선후보가 28일 서울 종로구 창신동에 위치한 전태일 재단을 방문할 예정이었으나 유족들의 거부로 방문이 무산됐다.
갈색 정장 차림의 박 후보는 이날 오전 10시25분께 현장에 도착했으나 전태일 재단으로 통하는 골목길이 유족과 시민단체, 기륭전자 및 쌍용차 노조원 등 60여명에 의해 막혀 있자 박계현 재단 사무국장과 간단하게 통화만 한 뒤 4분 만인 10시29 분께 발걸음을 돌렸다.
전태일 열사 유족들은 박 후보 방문에 앞서 성명을 내고 "너무 일방적인 통행이라서 맞이할 준비가 되어 있지 않다"며 방문거부 의사를 밝혔다.
전태일 열사의 동생 전태삼씨는 "암울했던 시간을 가슴 속에서 지울 수 없다"면서 "비정규직 노동자들이 하고 싶은 말 한마디 하지 못하고 비정규직이라는 항거할 수 없는 법에 종속돼 노예처럼 하루하루를 사는 오늘이 가슴 아프다"고 말했다.
그러면서 "사전에 사람끼리 마음의 소통 없이 행동하는 박근혜 의원의 방문 자체가 너무 일방적이라고 생각한다"면서 "자기 생각을 모든 사람에게 정당화하려는 독선을 지양해야 한다"고 지적했다.
그는 "이 나라에서 우선 시급한 것은 국민이 이해할 수 있도록 쌍용자동차 22명의 노동자의 죽음이 있는 대한문 분향소부터 방문하고 분향하는 것"이라며 쌍용차 정리해고 문제의 조속한 해결을 촉구했다.
쌍용차 노조원들은 최근 서울 여의도 새누리당 당사 앞에서 쌍용차 사태해결을 촉구하며 시위를 벌여왔다.
전태일 열사의 동생이자 민주통합당 비례대표 1번으로 국회에 입성한 전순옥 의원도 성명을 내고 "착잡한 마음을 금할 길이 없다"면서 "박 후보가 좋은 취지로 재단을 방문하는 것이겠지만 이 나라 노동의 현실은 그렇게 쉽게 개선될 수 없을 만큼 문제투성이가 돼버렸다. 현재의 노동 문제 해결이 우선돼야 한다"고 밝혔다.
재단방문 무산 후 박 후보는 청계천 6가에 있는 '전태일 다리'로 이동했다.
전태일 다리는 전태일 열사의 어머니 이소선 여사의 노제와 김근태 민주통합당 상임고문의 영결식 등이 치러진 곳이며 야권 인사들이 공직 출마를 할 때마다 찾는 상징적인 장소이다.
박 후보는 김준용 국민노동조합총연맹 전문위원의 안내로 전태일 동상에 헌화했 으나 그 과정에서 "무슨 자격으로 여기 왔느냐", "어떻게 여기를 모독하느냐", "대통령 자격 없다"는 시민단체와 노조원들의 항의가 쏟아지면서 현장은 순간 아수라장으로 변했다.
쌍용차 노조원으로 보이는 한 남성은 전태일 동상 앞에 드러누운 뒤 고함을 지르며 박 후보가 놓은 국화꽃을 집어던지기도 했다.
박 후보는 전태일 동상 옆에 위치한 전태일 열사 분신장소에 잠시 머문 뒤 3분 만에 현장을 떠났다.
박 후보는 자신을 안내한 김준용 전문위원이 `노동자가 행복한 나라를 만드실 거죠'라고 물은 데 대해 "네. 꼭 그렇게 하겠다"고 말하면서 "오늘 못 뵌 분들한테도 얘기해 주세요. 노동자가 행복한 나라를 만들겠다"고 밝혔다.
박 후보는 "산업화와 민주화 세력이 화해협력하는 나라를 만들겠다"고도 했다.
