미국 오하이오에서 생일 파티 중 한 아이가 수영장에서 익사한 상태로 뒤늦게 발견되는 끔찍한 사건이 벌어져 충격을 주고 있다.
영국 일간지 데일리 메일의 보도에 따르면 4살 여아 시나이야 무어는 지난 31일 뒷마당 수영장 바닥에서 발견되어 급히 병원으로 후송되었으나 의식을 회복 못하고 사망했다.
사건 당일 생일파티에는 약 75명~100여명이 참석했음에도 불구, 생일을 맞은 다른 1살배기 아이에게 생일 축하 노래를 불러주는데 정신이 팔려 아무도 아이를 보지 못했다고 전했다.
아이는 처음에 구명조끼를 착용한 상태로 수영장에 들어갔으나 밖으로 잠시 나올 때 이를 벗은 뒤 다시 입지 않고 들어간 것으로 밝혀졌다. 시나이어 무어의 가족은 “아이가 집 안에 들어왔거나 트램펄린 위에서 놀고 있는 줄 알았다”고 말했다.
경찰 측은 “이번 사건은 누구도 비난할 수 없는 그저 불행한 사고” 라고 말하며 안타까운 마음을 드러냈다.

4-year-old drowns while others sing ‘Happy Birthday’
A child was found drowned to death in Ohio at a birthday party, the Daily Mail reported Sunday.
According to the report, the 4-year-old, named Sinaia Moore, was found in the bottom of the backyard swimming pool. The baby was rushed to a nearby hospital, but was pronounced dead later that day.
About 75 to 100 people were present at the party, but they were singing “Happy Birthday” to a 1-year-old and didn’t spot Sinaia drowning, police said.
The police also revealed that the young girl had been wearing a float vest before getting out of the pool, but reentered without wearing the vest.
“We thought she was inside or playing on a trampoline,” the family of the 4-year-old was quoted as saying.
“No one can be accused for this. It is just a sad and unfortunate accident,” the police said.
