영국 유학 컨설팅 회사 QS가 매년 작성하는 아시아 대학 순위 에서 카이스트가 2위를 차지 하고 서울대학교는 작년과 같은 4위를 유지했다. 카이스트의 순위는 QS가 6년 째 작성중인 “아시아 대학 랭킹”에서 국내 대학교로는 사상 최고다.
또, 홍콩 과학기술대가 일등 자리를 싱가폴 국립 대학에 내주면서 처음으로 홍콩에 있지 않은 학교가 순위의 ‘톱’에 위치 했다.
QS는 또 ‘랭킹의 주요 한국 20개 대학 중 13개가 순위를 유지하거나 올라갔다’고 발표하며 한국과 싱가폴 대학들의 연구 개발 투자와 증진된 국제화 프로그램들을 순위 상승의 주 원인으로 꼽았다.
한편, 카이스트와 서울대학교에 이어서 우리나라 대학들은 각각 9위 (포항공대), 16위 (연세대학교), 17위 (성균관대학교), 18위 (고려대학교)로 나타났다.

KAIST jumps to 2nd in Asia
Universities from Singapore and South Korea displaced their Hong Kong counterparts this year from the top spots of the annual Asian university rankings assembled by Quacquarelli Symonds Ltd. QS attributed the reversals to improved research and internationalization programs.
This is the first time the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology has ranked in the top five, and the first time an institution based outside Hong Kong has topped the list.
“KAIST’s surge up to second place has been achieved through an improved performance in the research-based metrics, alongside a concerted effort to internationalize,” QS said in its report.
The QS system uses nine indicators in its evaluation including the number of times faculty research papers are cited, academic reputation and faculty to student ratio. The National University of Singapore, this year’s No. 1, scored 99 points or more out of a perfect score of 100 in seven of the nine criteria.
Seoul National University, widely viewed as South Korea’s most prestigious institution of higher education, ranked fourth for the second consecutive year while last year’s highest ranker, Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, dropped to fifth.
