Political party leaders to ask Park for more 'communication'

Floor leaders of three major political parties are expected to ask President Park Geun-hye for more "communication" with lawmakers while running her government during their meeting slated for later this week, party officials said Tuesday.

The meeting, the first of its kind following last month's parliamentary elections, is set to take place at Cheong Wa Dae on Friday, between Park and floor leaders of the ruling Saenuri Party, the main opposition Minjoo Party and the People's Party.

"The result of last month's general elections means that the president has to change how she runs state affairs," said a Saenuri official, adding that there must be a change between the presidential office and the political parties.

Park's ruling Saenuri Party suffered a serious defeat in the April 13 polls by grabbing 122 out of 300 seats up for grabs.

Meanwhile, the main opposition Minjoo Party and the People's Party secured 123 and 38 seats, respectively. Seventeen other seats are held by other minor party members and independents.

Chung Jin-suk, floor leader of the Saenuri Party, and his counterparts from the Minjoo Party, Woo Sang-ho, and the People's Party, Park Jie-won, will attend the meeting, along with their chief policymakers.

The official said Park and other participants could discuss how to cooperate on state affairs and that she will hold such a meeting with the leaders of the political parties more often in the future.

The Minjoo Party is expected to ask Park for her respect toward the legislative branch and more active communication with the two opposition parties.

"I will ask the president to listen to the voice of the people as there are many who feel that she is always walking down a one-way street," Woo said during an interview with a local radio station. (Yonhap)
