A teenage boy suspected of torching a construction site last year was taken into custody, police said Wednesday.

According to Incheon Nambu Police Station, the 17-year-old male suspect set fire to a layer of dust at a construction site in Nam-gu, Incheon. The fire was extinguished in 10 minutes, and no injuries were reported.

The CCTV images taken at the crime scene showed that the arsonist was wearing women’s clothes at the time, misleading the investigators to think the arsonist was a young woman.

The suspect was caught after the police, while interrogating him on a different case, noticed that he was about the same size as the arsonist, according to police. He confessed to the crimes and said he started a fire because he was “curious if dust layers would catch fire.”

An official from the police said the alleged arsonist routinely wore women’s clothing and talked in high-pitched voice.

지난해에 여성의 복장을 한 채 공사장에 불을 지른 한 10대 청소년이 경찰에 붙잡혔다.

인천 남부경찰서는 6일, 지난해 3월 2일에 인천시 남구의 한 재개발 지역에서 라이터로 공사장에 불을 지른 혐의로 (현주건조물 방화) 중학교 중퇴생 A군(17)을 불구속 입건했다고 밝혔다.

경찰에 따르면 불은 공사장 방진막 10m 가량과 철 구조물을 태우고 10분만에 진화되었으며, 인명피해는 없었다고 한다.

경찰은 1년동안 수사를 진행했음에도 용의자를 확보하지 못했는데, 이는 사건 당시 인근 버스 CCTV에 찍힌 모습을 보고 용의자가 여성일 것이라 추정했기 때문이다. 경찰은 이에 주변 여자 고등학생과 대학생을 대상으로 수사를 벌였으나 용의자를 확보하지 못했다.

그러나 경찰은 최근 다른 사건으로 입건된 A군을 조사하다가 그의 인상착의가 방화용의자와 비슷한 것을 주목해 조사에 착수했고 A군의 자백을 받았다.

경찰 관계자는 A군이 성 정체성에 혼란을 겪었으며 평소 여자 목소리를 내며 여성복을 즐겨 입었다고 설명했다.

A군은 "친구들과 함께 길을 걸어가다가 방진막에 불이 붙을지 궁금해 범행을 저질렀다"고 진술한 것으로 알려졌다.
